For as long as there has been health care, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) people have been a part of the field, as caregivers and as patients. Whether you identify as LGBTQ or not, this guide is to help you understand the obstacles LGBTQ patients encounter when seeking health care, how to be respectful in your conversations and interactions, and what you can do as a health care provider to support all your patients.

Growing and Evolving
"Graphic designer Daniel Quasar added a five-colored chevron to the LGBTQ Rainbow Flag to place a greater emphasis on 'inclusion and progression'. The flag includes black and brown stripes to represent marginalized LGBTQ communities of color, along with the colors pink, light blue and white, which are used on the Transgender Pride Flag. Quasar's design builds on a design adopted by the city of Philadelphia in June 2017. Philadelphia's version added black and brown stripes to the top of the Rainbow Flag, to represent LGBTQ communities of color."

Did You Know?
- The first Pride Parade in the United States happened in New York City on June 28th, 1970.
- There have been documented transgender sex reassignment/gender confirmation surgeries since the early 1900s.
- One of the earliest same-sex relationships ever recorded was in Egypt, 2400 BCE, between two men.
- In the United States, June is LGBTQ Pride Month and October is LGBTQ History Month. There are several more periods of awareness and celebration throughout the year.
- Lavender, a light pinkish-purple color, has long been associated with homosexuality and the LGBTQ movement, since the late 19th century. Most famously, in the McCarthy era of American politics (late 1940s-1950s), men and women suspected of homosexuality were "purged" from their jobs in the federal government during "The Lavender Scare."
