Cover Letter or No Cover Letter?

So you found a job that you want to apply to and your resume is ready to go. So, what about a cover letter...

Question: Why is a cover letter important?

Answer:

  • It can set you apart from other applicants who may not submit a cover letter
  • It can reveal your personality and help you built a rapport
  • A cover letter is your opportunity to match your skills and experience with the specific requirements for the position

Question: Should I have a standard cover letter for every job I apply to?

Answer: No, sending out a basic cover letter might actually hurt your chances. Each cover letter you compose should cater to the specific job requirements that you are applying for. Cater your cover letter towards that specific job.

Question: Should I always submit a cover letter when applying for a job?

Answer: If the application instructions expressly say not to include a cover letter, or if an online application offers no opportunity, then you can forego the cover letter. Be aware that you should not send a cover letter when the employer specifically says not to, because this may be a test of your ability to follow directions.
